TRAINING PROGRAM EFFICIENCY IN RELATION TO COMPETENCY SKILL AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY BATCH 2017-2018.

Aims: To provide information and relevant data about the efficiency of the training program of hospitals and schools of Medical Technology.


Study design: Descriptive design


Place and Duration of Study: Sample: University of Perpetual Help Medical Center, between October 2017 and November 2017.


Methodology: We used 26 Medical Technology Interns as respondents who completed the rotation of every laboratory sections and the student's grades in major subjects for academic performance. Evaluation forms (questionnaires) were used to measure the competency level and efficiency of the training program.


Results: The competency skills of interns in Hematology, Microbiology, Clinical Microscopy and Clinical Chemistry sections were evaluated as "very good". In Histopathology  section was evaluated as "excellent". Immunohematology was evaluated as "excellent" in ABO Forward/Reverse Typing and ABO Cell typing Gel Method while the competency in Proper Protective Equipment was evaluated as "good", and in Immunology and Serology competency was evaluated as " Excellent"  in SD Bioline Dengue NS1 Ag and SD BIOLINE Dengue IgG/IgM test kits while in Proper Protective Equipment was evaluated as "good". The academic performance of the Interns in Clinical Chemistry  the students performed better academically in clinical chemistry (average=2.42) compared to the other subjects. The interns performed the least academically in hematology (average=2.66). The standard deviation is lowest in Histopathology and Highest in Immunohematology, Clinical Microscopy and Clinical Chemistry. The correlation Matrix between Academic Performance and Competency in Clinical Chemistry section indicated the strongest negative relationship(r=0.543 ) as pipetting. Theweakest positive relationship is from the Immunohematology section in terms of reverse typing (r=0.023).


Conclusion: The University of Perpetual Help-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University Medical Technology Interns were skilled to execute the procedures in every laboratory sections especially in the clinical chemistry. The academic performance of the interns varies, but is limited to have a passing grade in the different subjects especially in clinical chemistry wherein the interns performed better academically. The training program of the school was not good enough in some of the factors conducive to effective training needs to urgently implement measures to address this shortcoming in terms of competencies.
