Background: Intravenous  lidocaine infusion  has been reported to provide effective analgesia  in cancer pain refractory lo opioid.


Objective: The objective of this systematic   review was to establish evidence for the effectiveness  and safety of intravenous  lidocaine infusion  in the management  of refractory cancer pain.


Methodology:  This  is  a systematic   review.  A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases including Cochrane Library, Medline (Ovid) and PubMed from January  2001  to June 2017    to identify  published   studies   on the effectiveness  of intravenous   I idocai neon refractory cancer pain in adult  patients.   The outcomes measured  for this review were pain relief  and adverse events.


Results:   Overall,   the 3  studies   included   in this review


reported evidence that parenteral  lidocaine was well-tolerated and provided relief in opioid-refractory cancer pain.  The results must  be interpreted with caution given the inherent  limitations ofa retrospective qualitative  analysis  and a phase 2 randomized controlled trial.


Conclusion:  With the  limited  number  of studies  on the effectiveness  and safety of intravenous lidocaine   infusion  for opioid-refractory  cancer pain, this  systematic review  highlights the need for standardized  lidocaine  administration  protocols. Larger  randomized  controlled  trials  are needed  to establish parenteral  lidocaine's   efficacy  and safety in  order to make it widely available.
