Early identification of high-risk pregnant mothers and transfer in time for delivery of their babies in a perinatal center is preferred over transporting ill newborn infants into a neonatal intensive care unit. In this study in the Philippine Children's Medical Center, nineteen inborn infants were matched with 19 outborn infants in terms of birthweight, apgar score at 5 minutes, and gestational age. Only 5% of the inborn infants died compared to 42% of the outborn infants (p<0.000). Thirty five percent, lower costs, amounting to approximately P 5,300 savings per child born in PCMC, were documented (p=0.01). Establishments of a perinatal center resulted in better clinical outcomes and lower hospitalization costs in inborn compared to outborn infants.
The project aimed to improve the health care delivery in government hospital through the identification of more efficient health care management tools. Specifically the project was carried out to quantify the improvement in service delivery, both in terms of neonatal outcome and costs due to establishment of perinatal center.
