This is a study to determine cross-allegenicity/cross-antigenicity between closely related grasses: Cyanodon dactylon (bermuda grass) and Eleucine indica (yard grass) both under tribe Chlorideae, and between Saccharum officinarum (sugar cane) and Saccharum spontaneum (talahib). Two hundred and thirty patients with inhalant allergies were given intradermal skin tests using 2 ml of 1:1,000 pollen allergen extracts. Wheal diameter produced by each was graded based upon the percentile that corresponded to each patient.Seventy-two percent of the subjects gave significant and positive skin test reaction to the test grasses. A significant relationship (cross-reaction/cross-antigenicity) was noted between bermuda grass (56%) and yard grass (51%). Less cross-antigenicity was found between sugarcane (37%) and talahib (29%).The proportion of patients with positive skin test results to bermuda and/or yard grass antigen demonstrated a significant difference from that of either talahib and or sugarcane results (p0.05).
