This study aims to determine the anti-bacterial properties of medicinal plants against commonly isolated gram positive and gram negative organisms of acute respiratory tract infections among patients seen at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital, Batac, Ilocos Norte. In-vitro anti-bacterial analysis of Artemisia vulgaris (Damong Maria), Eucalyptus tereticornis (Eucalyptus) and Mentha arvensis (Yerba Buena) against the non-fastigious throat-swab organism of acute upper respiratory tract infections was performed among pediatric patients seen at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital, Batac, Ilocos Norte.


Acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) is the predominating morbidity case in Ilocos Norte and the country. The search for alternative medicines that are inexpensive, accessible, effective and safe shall alleviate the health condition of the locality. A total of 782 in-vitro testing of Artemisia vulgaris (Damong Maria), Eucalyptus tereticornis (Eucalyptus) and Mentha arvensis (Yerba Buena) on its antibacterial properties against 28 non-fastidious bacterial throat-swab isolates from pediatric patients with acute URTI were done. The bacteria species isolated were acinetobacter calcoacetious (32.1%), staphylococcus epidermidis (21.4%), staphylococcus aureus (14.3%), pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.6%) and klebsiella pneumonia (3.6%). Using the agar cup method of antibacterial testing and data analyzed using the ANOVA for completely randomized design (CRD) and the least significantly difference (LSD) test showed that eucalyptus has an almost similar behavior with ampicillin by significantly (p0.01) inhibiting the growth of staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus epidermidis, acinetobacter calcoacetious, but was not significantly different compared with the control against pseudomonas aeruginosa. Damong maria and yerba buena both significantly (p0.05) inhibited the growth of staphylococcus epidermidis but were not significantly different from the control against the rest of the organisms. This study has proven the in-vitro antibacterial effectivity of these medicinal plants against the non-fastidious test bacteria, and has bridged the gap between the folkloric evidences to favorably open further scientific studies in animal pharmacology and clinical trials, and thus attain our ultimate goal of providing for an effective and inexpensive control of ARI cases in Ilocos Norte and possibly the country.
